Committed to Essbase 11.1.1

Sorry it has been so long since I posted but I have been working on some non-Essbase product development area of our product. Specifically, I have been working on FIPS-140 (“Federal Information Processing Standards”) compliant computing required for Federal government computing systems. So if anyone wants to know about SHA-1 hashing (FIPS compliant) vs MD5 hashing (not FIPS compliant) or TripleDES encryption algorithms, I may be able to help them.

I have had some other things going on as well. I was interviewed by my local newspaper for the front page of the business section. The topic was businesspeople who fly their own airplanes on business which I do nearly every trip east of the Rockies. In fact, I flew myself and my family to New Orleans for the ODTUG Kaleidoscope conference. If you are interested in reading about my '15 minutes of fame', here is a link to the story: http://www.al.com/huntsvilletimes/stories/index.ssf?/base/business/1218993308126870.xml&coll=1

Now, on to Essbase stuff..

I haven't been writing much about Essbase 11.1.1 as I haven't had it installed on my laptop. Instead, I had one of my assistants create a VM with Essbase 11.1.1 on it.. Well, despite the fact that I have a laptop with 4 Gb of RAM, of which only 3 Gb is usable as I have XP Professional for my OS, VMWare ran very sluggishly on my system. Perhaps it is because I also had the entire Essbase stack, Oracle 11g Enterprise and SQL Server 2005 all running in addition to VMWare that made it slow, but still it was painful to turn all of that stuff off before firing up the VMWare image. Thus, I tended not to run it much and, in fact, ran it just enough to make sure Dodeca ran on 11.1.1.

Have you ever heard the old story about commitment? It goes something like 'a chicken and a pig were discussing their importance to breakfast and the chicken claimed it was more important as it contributed eggs. The pig replied that it made more of a commitment to breakfast when it provided bacon..' Well, translating that to my Essbase situation, I have committed to working with Essbase 11.1.1. Last night, I completely removed Essbase 9.3.1 from my system and will install 11.1.1 today. How is that for commitment?

Hi Tim Tow , how are you??

I think you can help me with a issue my company is having at the moment.

We are just thinking to acquire the hyperion Essbase / Planning for our organization. I read in the Oracle website that a new version is coming up, the V11.
I just want to understand what is the main differences between the old version (9) to version 11. Can you help me with that?
My e-mail is jorge.babadopulos@gmail.com

Thank you very much,

Hello Tim,

First of all thanks to your blog that helps me a lot!

I am not a very frequent visitor of your blog, however I do find much interesting posts, I would like to know how to migrate from Hyperion Essbase version 9/x to the latest version or how to backup the data such that there is no data loss at all.

Thank you for your patience.

Ravi Kiran.

Hi Ravi,

Thanks for your kind comments. I don't do Essbase administration, so to speak, and thus don't consider myself an authority on how to *upgrade*. That being said, many people I know export their data and copy their outlines, calc scripts, etc to the new server. You can also use the OlapUnderground Advanced Security Manager to extract/import security information between the versions (get the ASM from our website at http://www.appliedolap.com/default.asp?ID=64).

Hi Tim and Ravi,

Tim, I really want to thank you for taking so much pains to create those documents and post them. I know it takes too much time and efforts to do this. I read your blog regularly. Thanks.

Ravi-
For migrating Essbase applications or databases, you need to use the migration utility in administrator console. This migration utility will give you the option to migrate the security alongwith the aplications and databases. You need to provide the details of target Essbase server only. One important point to be noted is this utility will migrate the application and database outline, rule files and other information only and no actual data is exported. you need to calculate and load your cube at the target machine. you can use migration utility even if two Essbase versions are different. If you cannot provide the details of your target server, you can export everything into a file and taking this file to your target machine, you can migrate.
Hope this will help.

Hi Ravi,

I've done a few of these upgrades. If you still have questions I'de b happy to offer some pointers to help get you going in the right direction. If you're doing straight essbase to to essbase migration without Planning, its a fairly straightforward task.

Hi Tim,

Many thanks for the reply, I understand what you have posted, the OlapUnderground Advanced Security Manager is just to export and import security settings, however if you export security settings for Essbase 9.3x how can I post the same to Essbase 7.x??

Please correct me if Im wrong or direct me if you have any friend references. Sorry to bother you much!

Thank you very much!

Best Regards,

Ravi Kiran

Hi Tim Tow,
Hope this message finds you well.

In fact, I need your assistance in a different way. I mean, I won’t ask about functionality or technicality...etc… but here it is…

I’ve been assigned to build the Hyperion department within our company in Jordan (www.intracom.jo) and I’m really having a hard time creating these positions as I browsed the net, asked people and I was able to categorize the tasks as Admin tasks, Development tasks and ETL.

So, I wonder if you have the main roles and responsibilities of each of the above and I’m open for better ideas.

Again, I know this is not what you usually do but who knows, you might be the one who has the magic stick.

Thanks a lot and have a good day.

Have you tried anything with XOLAP? I understand that this is a generic port of what DB2 OLAP did. If it works, that's massive. What have you seen? What have you heard?
